2023 chickens

apache

black jersey giant

apache is one of the chicks that hatched during the year of 2023. they got their name from constantly running and jumping around. albeit being one of 5 almost identical black chicks, apache is identifiable by a bright red comb and piercing eyes. we ended up giving apache back to our neighbors, where he is currently becoming soup.

cthulhu

isa brown

cthulhu is easily the strongest chicken we own, as when she is picked up, she will very aggressively flap her wings to break out of your grip. when she was a chick, it was almost impossible to tell her apart from skeletron, but after a bit of time skeletron grew darker feathers, and the constant confusion over who is who has mostly stopped. other than that, cthulhu is a pretty cool chicken. although she has a tendency to wander into the middle of the yard for some completely unknown reason. she was the third chickens to start laying eggs.

duck

rhode island red

is that a duck? no, it's a chicken. duck is a very calm chicken, but still runs away from people when they get close to her. at random times, she will let out the loudest, longest cluck that you have ever heard. maybe it's because of this that she has a tendency to find some water, start drinking it, and get confused when all the other chickens have moved to another place and she can't find where they are. when she was a chick, most notably the smallest one, she would constantly escape the cage and run around the room. so much so, that we had to constantly make sure that she was still in her cage and that the hole in the side was still closed. duck was the fourth chicken to start laying eggs.

goose

leghorn

goose is by far the calmest chicken that we have, as picking her up and such doesn't seem to affect her. another unusual thing that goose does, which the rest of our chickens don't, is not walk away if you get too close to her. she won't care, and will sometimes even walk towards you. like cthulhu, she has a tendency to walk out into the middle of the yard for no apparent reason. she also sometimes wanders off, and we have to find her and bring her back to the group before she gets lost. as a chick, she would regularly kick shavings all over the place, sometimes even into the food dish and water dispenser. she was the second chicken to start laying eggs.

gray

blue cochin

gray, named after the color of his coat, is a very big and boisterous rooster. he enjoys screaming at the top of his lungs during at 5:00 in the morning, and he especially likes to do it while you are watching. as of now, gray lives with our neighbors in their chicken coop.

ostrich

black jersey giant

ostrich likes to crane their neck around, hence the name. they mysteriously disappeared from the chicken coop one day, and we don't know how or when it happened.

pepper

black jersey giant

pepper is a beautiful chicken, with a glossy black coat of feathers, some boasting a rust-colored trim around the edges. pepper acts like the queen of her group, having the other black chickens crows around her.

pollo

black jersey giant

pollo is a silly little chick that once decided to step in the water bowl. for a large part of her existence, nobody could tell pollo apart from Пушистик. however, pollo ended up sporting a shorter tail than her counterpart, and you could distinguish them by comparison. on the 22nd of november, pollo curled up in a nesting box and later died of an unknown cause.

shy gal

black jersey giant

if not already evidenced through implication, shy gal is a very shy hen. she doesn't particularly like people, and would rather run in circles instead of greeting you. sporting an all-black coloration, apart from a rust-colored trim along the edge of her breast feathers, shy gal is as black as the night.

skeletron

isa brown

skeletron is a bit of a weird chicken. she will occasionally bite your finger, and has done so to me at least five times already. when she was a chick, she and cthulhu looked almost identical, and the only way we could tell the difference between the two of them was to look very closely at the markings on their bodies. although now, she has grown a much darker coat of feathers, and it's not left up to a guessing game to differentiate the two. besides the occasional finger biting, skeletron is a really good hen. she was the first to lay an egg, and we've gotten an egg every day from her since. on one occasion, while she was trying to lay an egg, all four of the other chickens came in to check on how she was doing. it apparently bothered her, because she squawked and clucked with the fury of hell at them until they left. when we returned from a recent vacation, skeletron was found sitting on a collection of eggs from while we were gone. because of this, we decided to give her some fertilized eggs to sit on, and soon they will hatch!

yolko

light brahma

according to thehappychickencoop.com, "light brahmas are easygoing chickens, calm and docile." yolko is the exact opposite of that. she is a bit on-edge, and tends to stay behind all the others. she also darts away quickly when someone gets close to her. if you do manage to catch her before she runs to the other side of the planet, she will let out low squawking, but otherwise be unperturbed. another odd quality of yolko is the feathers she has on her feet. they don't seem to bother her, though. when she was a chick, she would always be the first to go for worms that were dropped into the box, but she seems to have lost that trait, as she no longer happily gobbles them up, even if they are handed to her. she was the fifth (and last) chicken to start laying eggs.

пушистик

black jersey giant

Пушистик (pronounced "pushistik"), is a very fluffy chick. Пушистик was the first chick to hatch, and liked to poke their head out from under skeletron's wings. while pollo was alive, it was almost impossible to differentiate pollo and Пушистик from each other, as they both had bright red faces accompanied by stark black coats.
